Introduction to RIP (Routing Information Protocol)

RIP (Routing Information Protocol) is a dynamic routing protocol. RIP (Routing Information Protocol) distance vector routing protocol small IP  networks. RIP (Routing Information Protocol) uses UDP port 520 for route updates. RIP (Routing Information Protocol) calculates the best route based on hop count. Like all distance vector routing protocols, RIP takes some time to converge. RIP (Routing Information Protocol) is a simple protocol and it requires less CPU power and RAM than some other routing protocols.

Some features and drawbacks of RIP (Routing Information Protocol)

The metric of RIP (Routing Information Protocol) is Hop Count. RIP (Routing Information Protocol) has a hop count limit of 15 hops. Hops more than 15 is considered as a part of routing loop and RIP (Routing Information Protocol) drops that packet.

RIP (Routing Information Protocol) supports classful routing only. RIP (Routing Information Protocol) cannot handle classless routing. It is  not possible to subnet a network properly using VLSM if you are running RIP v1.
